FAQs About Herndon Camp Meeting

Here you will find answers to questions you might have about the Herndon Camp Meeting Association or the Camp Meeting itself.  Please understand that some of these answers are in condensed form.  A more detailed answer can be found in the Constitution and Bylaws of the HCMA.  Please see a member of the Board of Directors for further information.

Q: What is the Herndon Camp Grove?

A: Herndon Camp Meeting began as a small tabernacle encircled by tents.  It has evolved into a beautiful grove situated on 14 acres. There is a 400-seat Tabernacle inside a circle of 63 cottages and 5 apartment buildings.  Other amenities include a dining hall, open-air pavilion, tennis/basketball court, and playground.

Q: What is the Herndon Camp Meeting Association?

A: The first Camp Meeting was held in 1901. A stockholders organization was formed on September 9, 1901, and stocks were sold for $10.00 a share.  It existed like that until 1990, when all stocks were located and turned in.  After writing the Constitution and Bylaws, Herndon Camp became a membership organization as it exists today.

Q: What is the purpose of the Herndon Camp Meeting Association?

A: Through the sponsoring of spiritual programs such as evangelical camp meetings, Bible conferences, church retreats, Sunday School picnics, and services of evangelical Christian artistic and educational presentations, the Herndon Camp Meeting Association shall have as its objective the glorification of God and the salvation and discipling of all people.  (Constitution Article II)

Q: What is the governing body of the Association?

A: The management, development, and disposition of the affairs and property of the HCMA shall be vested in a Board of Directors consisting of the six Executive Committee members of the HCMA, and five committee chairpersons (Program, Food Service, Buildings, Grounds, Rentals).

Q: Can anyone become a member of the Association?

A: There are no denominational qualifications to become a member. If you demonstrate an active interest in the purpose and the welfare of the Association, profess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, maintain active participation in a Christian church, and agree with and sign the "Statement of Faith," you are eligible to become a member.

Q: What are the responsibilities of a member of the Association?

A: A member should take an active interest in the Camp Grove.  They are responsible to pay their dues of $25 by July 1 of each year.  Each member should try to attend the Association meeting held the first Saturday of Camp Meeting.  It is important for members to help, if at all possible, with the several work days throughout the year.  Non-members are also very welcome at any work day.

Q: How do I become a member of the Association?

A: By submitting an application for membership, a signed copy of the Statement of Faith, and a letter from the ministerial staff of the church you attend to the secretary of the Board at least 10 days before a board meeting.  You will be asked to attend a Board meeting for a short interview, then they will vote on your membership.

Q: Who owns the grounds? Cottages?

The Association owns all the land as well as several buildings.  The lots on which cottages sit are leased on a yearly basis from the Association.  The individual owns each cottage.

Q: Can I come and stay for the week of Camp Meeting if I don't own a cottage?

A: Yes! There are approximately 20 apartments available for the duration of Camp Meeting, or for any number of nights.

Q: How are the grounds and buildings cared for?

A: One Board member chairs the Grounds committee and another chairs the Buildings committee.  Much work is done on a volunteer basis. Cottage owners are responsible for the upkeep of their own cottages and agree to keep them in good repair.

Q: Are the grounds and multi-purpose building available throughout the year?

A: The main water supply is turned on in April and off in late October/early November, so there is no activity during the winter months. The summer months are a different story, with some people spending most of the summer here, and others coming for weekends or days at a time.  The multi-purpose building/dining hall is heated and air-conditioned and has its own water supply. It has been rented in the past for baby or wedding showers, church conferences, and wedding receptions. The grounds are available to rent as well, and have been used by several churches for weekend retreats and Sunday School picnics. The apartments are available for those who wish to spend the night.

Q: How do I, as a member, know what is happening within the Association?

A: An Association member meeting is held the first Saturday of Camp Meeting. At this meeting, reports are given by chairpersons of their respective committees, elections are held, and members get to discuss and vote on bylaw changes, major expenditures, etc.

Thank you for your support and interest in the Herndon Camp Grove, and continue to remember it in your prayers, as the primary goal of Herndon Camp Meeting is the glorification of God and the salvation and discipling of all people.  If you have any unanswered questions, please reach out to herndoncamp@gmail.com.  We would love to have you become a member of our family at the Herndon Camp Grove.
